Buying a Cheap notebook computer

Maybe you travel frequently for business, or you're a student who needs to run between the lab, library, and dorm room. Maybe you need to take work home from the office, or you need a portable platform for business presentations. Maybe you just like the idea of a sleek little computer that lets you get things done wherever you happen to be. Any of those reasons makes it worth considering a notebook computer rather than the traditional

The obvious appeal of a notebook is its portability--and the flexibility that gives you. Notebooks today are powerful enough to handle any mainstream application, though desktops are still a better choice for some specialized uses, such as heavy 3-D gaming or high-end audio-video use. The biggest downside to a notebook is that you'll pay a higher price than you would for a comparable desktop system. Additionally, if you use the notebook often as a substitute for a desktop system, you may find yourself craving a larger display, a real mouse, and a full-size keyboard. You can buy these external devices and plug them in, but that too will add to the cost.

Still, there are a lot of reasons to love today's notebooks, from their superb screens to their amazingly thin dimensions. They've come a long way toward closing the performance gap with desktop computers, and they come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and weights, targeted toward different types of users and different price points. Top-of-the-line notebooks with the works, for example, generally cost over £3,000. Svelte, ultraportable units, while slightly less feature packed, can be similarly expensive. A more basic notebook can be had for about £1,500, but the products at the lower end of the price range do tend to be both less powerful and bulkier.

notebook Screen size and resolution
Arguably the most important component of a notebook, and often the most costly, is its display. In the lowest-cost systems you'll find 12.1-inch screens capable of color SVGA (800 x 600) resolution. (Note that the flat-panel displays that notebooks use, unlike desktop monitors, generally support only a single, fixed resolution.) A 12.1-inch display is, frankly, rather cramped for everyday use. It's considerably smaller than a sheet of letter-sized paper. Thus we strongly recommend opting for a larger screen if you can afford it and aren't looking for an ultrasmall machine. A 14.1-inch display, for example, gives you viewing area equivalent to that of a 15-inch desktop monitor (for arcane reasons, flat-panel displays and traditional monitors are measured differently).

More expensive notebooks are sometimes available with 15-inch displays, some of which support resolutions as high as 1,600 x 1,200. If you really want the biggest display and highest resolution possible in your notebook, they're worth considering, but for our taste they tend to make a notebook feel uncomfortably large, as well as hard to use in the cramped confines of an economy-class airline seat. Don't forget that you can attach an external monitor to a notebook as well, so you could buy a spacious 19-inch screen for use at your desk and rely on the internal display only when you're on the road. We tend to think 14.1-inch screens supporting 1,024 x 768 resolution strike the best compromise between viewable area and overall portability.

notebook Processor and memory
Entry-level notebooks are often built around an Intel Celeron processor, which is adequate for word processing, Web surfing, and e-mail. On a higher-end notebook, look for a Pentium III processor. If you're looking at Macintosh notebooks, they'll be based on PowerPC processors instead; for more information, check out our Buyer's Guide to Apple Macintosh Computers.

Rather than sinking your money into a higher clock speed (MHz rating) for a given processor, make sure the notebook has sufficient memory. In general, increasing the amount of RAM in a system will improve real performance much more than boosting the processor speed. Although you might see notebooks outfitted with 64 MB of RAM, you'll be much better off with 128 MB. Power users who run a lot of applications or work extensively with graphics will want 192 MB or even 256 MB.

Hard disks in notebooks tend to be quite a bit smaller than those in desktops. While 6 GB drives are not uncommon in low-cost systems, we think 10 GB is a more realistic size. If you plan to use the notebook as a substitute for a desktop system and load it with lots of applications, or if you'll use it for storing MP3 digital music files or images from a digital camera, 20 GB is even better.

notebook Mass-storage options
Once you look beyond the hard disk, storage options can start to get complicated. Many notebooks have a multipurpose drive bay that can accommodate a CD-ROM (or CD-RW or DVD) drive or a floppy drive, or even a spare battery. On the other hand, if you don't anticipate needing any of these when you're traveling, you could save travel weight and size by opting for a notebook that lacks an internal drive bay, and simply connect an external CD-ROM or floppy drive when you need it.

If you do choose an internal drive, what type should you get? Some travelers like DVD drives because they can watch movies on long, boring flights. But there's little real business justification for getting a DVD drive, so for many buyers, the more meaningful choice is between a read-only CD-ROM and a rewritable CD-RW drive. We like CD-RW drives because they offer an easy mechanism for backing up data and they also let you record music CDs. They are somewhat more costly than a basic CD-ROM drive, though.

notebook Ports and connectivity
Because notebooks get used in a variety of locations, we suggest getting both a built-in 56 Kbps modem and integrated 10/100 Mbps Ethernet connection. The Ethernet connection will let you connect to an office LAN or a home network, or to high-speed Internet connections such as DSL and cable modems. The modem will let you dial in from anywhere a network connection isn't available. If you use a dial-up connection exclusively, you could omit the Ethernet adapter. If you want one later, you can buy it in the form of a plug-in PC (formerly PCMCIA) Card.

Notebooks usually come with a standard complement of ports that includes serial, parallel, USB (Universal Serial Bus), monitor, speaker, and microphone ports. Other options to consider include a TV-output or S-video port (so you can hook the notebook up to a regular TV) or a FireWire (IEEE 1394) port, which can be used as a high-speed connection for transferring video to and from many digital video cameras. Two slots for plugging in PC Cards are also fairly standard.

notebook Operating system and accessories
For PC notebooks, we recommend Windows 2000 as the notebook operating system for business users, and Windows Millennium Edition for home users. Windows 2000 is more resource hungry, but provides greater stability and security. Windows Me has a smaller footprint, boots faster, and can be kinder and gentler during peripheral installation. Mac notebooks will obviously run the latest preferred flavor of Mac OS.

notebook External monitor, keyboard, mouse, and port replicator: If you're using the notebook as your primary PC, you will be far more productive if you have a larger screen, full-size keyboard, and real mouse to work with. Connecting them all through a port replicator can save you the hassle of disconnecting and reconnecting them every time you take the notebook away from your desk.

notebook Spare battery: Regard notebook manufacturers' claims to battery life with healthy skepticism. If you need to work for extended periods away from a power outlet (for example, on an airplane, or in an all-day seminar in a hotel conference center), an extra battery will give you the juice you need.

notebook Wireless network card: For business users who want access to the corporate network while they're roaming around the office or in conference rooms, the convenience of a wireless network card is hard to beat. Home users can also use one to surf the Web while sitting on the couch.
